Posted by: antonella noviello

“Baba Marta” is one of the most popular Bulgarians customs.Thered and white woven threads are not just meaningless decoration, but symbolizethe wish for good health. They are the heralds of the coming of spring in Bulgaria. While white as a colorsymbolizes purity and soul, red is a symbol of life and passion. On the first day ofMarch and few days afterwards, Bulgarians exchange and wear white and redtassels or small dolls called "Пижои Пенда" (Pizho and Penda). This is an old pagan tradition and remains almost unchanged today.

The tradition calls for wearing the martenitsa until the person sees a storkor a blooming tree. The stork is considered a harbinger of spring and asevidence that Baba Marta is in a good mood and is about to retire.
