A Taste of Maths (ATOM)

The project targets 12-16 years old students. The working language is English. The duration of the project is six months. The goal of the project is to increase students’ motivation and interest for Mathematics, to stimulate their investigative spirit and curiosity by combining common mathematical contents of the curriculum with aspects of day-to-day life in different parts of Europe, using concrete objects as well as representations of mathematical concepts. It is also intended to facilitate mutual understanding through getting knowledge on the historical and cultural contexts partners live in.

Pi Day FlashMeeting

After technical difficulties, a variety of timetables, scenic panic and everything one can imagine we finally had our Pi Day FlashMeeting.

Such as we had already mentioned the Spanish Team had to ask for permission to stay at school during lunch time. Our lessons stop at 14:45. We thought about having a Pi Lunch. Families collaborated with the cooking and we had on our table all kind of circular pies, omelettes, cakes with Pi decorations.

When it was our turn each student went in front of the camera and showed everybody what has been cooked at home. They talked about ingredients and some of them about the quantities. They also showed their partners the Pi they had made for the Art Exhibition.

Then, we had lunch. It was pretty funny and a lot of English was produced, as we expected. Studetns are already asking for another FlashMeeting or even a trip.

It was interesting for students to realise they could understand other students speaking English, it's a kind of reward for them. They also said they had done better than the first time, so their critical spirit is also encouraged with this kind of activities.

In addition, we teachers learned that next time we'll need another computer to download files with documents and videos. We were not able to keep different sites at the same time.

Nex time we'll do better. Nevertheless, we consider the activity a successful one. The Spanish team would like to congratulate Irina for making the FlashMeeting possible.
